Why Choose Classical Pilates?

Classical Pilates

Contemporary Pilates does not follow the sequential methodology of the system. While some elements (like mat exercises and use of the Reformer) may be incorporated, contemporary Pilates is basically fusion-based exercise that focuses more on repetitions, weight of spring tension, and moving to rhythmic music. Contemporary studios will often incorporate high-intensity (cardio) work making it more of a HiiT fusion with Pilates apparatus.

Contemporary teachers are not trained in the Pilates System under the same rigorous standards as Classical Pilates teachers. Those who are comprehensively trained are required only to complete 450 hours of training. More often than not, contemporary studios will have instructors who have little or no training at all.

There are no set standards for contemporary Pilates. Classes vary from studio to studio and there is little to no differentiation between beginner, intermediate and advanced classes.

Classical Pilates is the practice of Pilates in its truest form - as intelligently and purposefully designed by Joseph Pilates himself. It involves whole-body integration in a specific sequence that builds from the foundation and gradually moves the body through all planes of motion in increasingly more complex ways. Classical Pilates develops the ideal balance of strength, flexibility and control in a very functional way that rejuvenates mind and body and spirit.

Classical teachers are required to undergo a rigorous training program with a minimum of 600 hours of training that includes self-practice by observation, continued personal practice, student teaching, studies in anatomy and movement sciences, and best practices for the industry.

There are set standards for classical Pilates. Classical studios remain generally consistent in their teaching and classes are differentiated by the level of the client's mastery of their body.
